As part of the FAA’s Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) Geostationary Communications and Control Segment (GCCS) initiative, a dedicated L-band payload was added to the Galaxy 15 satellite. Launched in 2005, the WAAS hosted payload was certified and put into operation to improve accuracy of GPS-based air navigation.
