Australian Defence Force (ADF)

The Intelsat-22 satellite, launching in early 2012, will carry a specialized UHF communications hosted payload to provide service to ADF. The UHF band is widely deployed for military satellite communications because of its adaptability to small, mobile terminals used by ground, sea and air forces. The satellite will have 48 C-band and 24 Kuband 36MHz equivalent transponders plus the UHF payload with 20 25kHz channels. Positioning the satellite over the Indian Ocean region yields a footprint ideally suited to the needs of the Australian and U.S. military. ADF estimates saving more than $150 million over the 15-year life of the contract by using the IGC hosted payload approach.
