Intelsat General Corporation has been awarded a contract by DRS Technical Services, Inc. to provide X-band satellite connectivity in Southwest Asia on two X-band satellites owned and operated by XTAR, LLC and Paradigm Secure Communications.
In addition, IGC will offer managed network services from its teleport in Fuchsstadt, Germany, to provide out-of-band monitoring and control of the X-band carriers and remote terminals. Intelsat General’s Ellenwood, GA-based Secure Operations Center will be integrated with the DRS Network Operations Center to provide 24 x 7 network monitoring and help desk support.
Under the terms of the contract, Intelsat General, an indirect, wholly-owned subsidiary of Intelsat S.A., the world’s leading provider of fixed satellite services, will provide network integration as well as end-to-end network monitoring and control of the X-band services on the XTAR-EUR and the Paradigm Skynet-5A satellites. The service will provide two 155-Mbps satellite links as well as a full range of supporting components, including high-speed modems with advanced coding; ground stations; fiber connectivity; and terrestrial equipment for the highdata-rate X-band link.
“This is another example of how Intelsat General is able to coordinate and deliver the global expertise of a range of companies in order to meet the government’s requirements for turn-key satellite connectivity,” said Kay Sears, President of Intelsat General. “This effort will leverage the expertise of all four companies in delivering a solution for our customer in the vital region of Southwest Asia.”
Paradigm, a wholly owned subsidiary of EADS Astrium, was established specifically to provide protected and survivable satellite communication services to the UK Ministry of Defence worldwide. Eric Beranger, CEO of Astrium Services said: “We are delighted to be continuing to support our valued customers in this difficult part of the world using our Skynet 5 fleet – providing the most powerful X-band capability currently in orbit.” “Our customer will benefit from our extensive experience in the Middle East coupled with the technical expertise of Intelsat General,” said Dr. Mitchell Rambler, president of DRS Technical Services Inc. “We will be able to bring a broad range of X-band communications services to the customer. This will enable military leaders to receive vital battlefield information almost as it happens, allowing timely informed decisions.”
“XTAR is very pleased to be included in the DRS Technical Services award to Intelsat General and proud to support our government users,” said William Schmidt, Vice President, Government Services. “XTAR-EUR’s high power transponders and steerable beams, which have the ability to transmit data at demonstrably higher rates, will be a significant contribution to the government end user in support of its mission in Southwest Asia.”
